A driver's license is a government-issued document that certifies an individual's ability to operate a vehicle safely and legally. To obtain a driver's license, an individual must pass required tests and meet certain criteria by the General Traffic Directorate.

Conditions for obtaining a Driving License:

  1. At age 16, you can get a driving license for small and medium-sized bikes.
  2. At age 18, you can get a private vehicle driving license.
  3. At age 20, you can get a driving license for large-sized bikes if you have held a medium and small bike driving license for two years.
  4. At age 21, you can get a driving license for large-sized public vehicles.
  5. At age 24, the applicant can get a driving license for large-sized buses that can seat 9 or more passengers.

Also, you can use the Traffic Life application to find out which types of licenses you can obtain by entering your birthdate.

 

13 steps to obtaining the Iraqi Driving License:

  1. Visit the Traffic Directorate to get a ticket from the front desk.
  2. Give the ticket to the specialized employee to receive the application form. You will need to fill out the application form with the help of the employee and pay a fee of 20,000 Iraqi dinars.

  1. Then, you will need to attach the following documents in one file:
  • The ticket from the front desk
  • The filled application forms.
  • The receipt of application form fees
  • Iraqi Unified National Card or the Civil Status ID(copy and original).
  • Iraqi Nationality Certificate (copy and original).
  • Residence Card (copy and original).
  • Two personal photos of the applicant.
  1. Afterwards, submit the file to the officer for his\her approval and stamp.

  1. Next, the employee will refer you to take the eye test. This test requires a fee of 25,000 Iraqi dinars, which you can pay at the financial department in the Traffic Directorate.
  2. After receiving the receipt, visit a health center approved by the Traffic Directorate for the eye test. You need to put these documents in one file:
  • Medical test receipt.
  • Driving License application.
  • The Unified National Card or the Civil Status ID (copy and original).
  • Iraqi Nationality Certificate (copy and original).
  • Residence card (copy and original).

Note: The medical test aims to get your vision checked to ensure safe driving, with or without glasses.

  1. Then, the health provider will stamp the file, and you will need to take it to the Traffic Directorate.
  2. Visit the financial department to pay a fee of 30,000 Iraqi dinars for the written and practical tests.
  3. To finish the process, you need to pass the written test. Once you have passed, the officer will stamp and approve your application form and give you a numbered ticket. You need to wait in a queue to take the practical test.
  4. After you pass the practical test, the officer will approve and stamp your application form.
  5. Then, you will need to pay 80,000 Iraqi dinars to the financial department for printing the Driving License.
  6. You will need to go to the officer to have your fingerprints and photograph taken.
  7. You can receive your Driving License within one or two days.

 

How much will it cost to obtain the Driving License?

The official fees will cost nearly 155,000 Iraqi dinars, in addition, to copy fees for your documents.

 

What is the validity period for a Driving License?

The validity of your driver's license is ten years from the date of issuance. (According to the Traffic Law (8) of 2019)

 

How can I renew my Driving License?

  1. Visit the Traffic Directorate to get a ticket from the front desk.
  2. Give the ticket to the specialized employee to receive the renewal Form. You will need to fill out the application form with the help of the employee and pay a fee of 20,000 Iraqi dinars.
  3. Then you will need to attach the following documents in one file:
  • The front desk ticket.
  • The receipt of the renewal form.
  • Iraqi Unified National Card or the Civil Status ID(copy and original).
  • Iraqi Nationality Certificate (copy and original).
  • Residence Card (copy and original).
  • Two personal photos of the applicant.
  • Your old Driving License.

  3. Then, you need to pay the fee for obtaining the new Driving License to the financial department. The fee is changing based on the type of your license.
  4. After you pay the fee, you can receive your license after an hour or on the second day.

Note: You don't need to take a written or practical test to renew your driver's license.

 

What happens if I don't renew my driver's license on the specified date?

If you don’t renew your driver's license within 30 days of its expiration, you will be fined 50,000 Iraqi dinars. If you pay the fine within 72 days after the license expiration date, the amount will be reduced by 50% to 25,000 Iraqi dinars. (According to the Traffic Law (8) of 2019, Article 25).
